HDR Photography

Journal Entry: Wed Apr 9, 2008, 2:22 PM
I've been pretty busy recently. Work hours are long and I'm too tired to head out for night photography. I've been planning a few shots of London for a while now; most to be taken during dusk and night.

I'm also going to try my hand at some HDR photography...

HDR photographs I've seen on Flickr are a little hit-n-miss. Too often the images look surreal; I think people get a little too carried away when down-sampling from the 32bit HDR image. I always thought the purpose of HDR photography was to try and capture a scene as closely to that as perceived by the human eye. It's a shame when someone wrecks a potentially great picture by pursuing pure detail (HDRi captures greater detail due to multiple exposures) as opposed to recreating a scene as accurately as possible.

I will be experimenting with the HDR function within PS to see if I can produce decent results. Hopefully things will work out as planned. I won't be pursuing huge numbers of exposures; 3 exposures taken using the bracketing function on my DSLR should suffice. Loads of people seem to think the greater the number of exposures, the better the picture... which is, of course, rubbish.

If so many people can capture moments so perfectly with a single exposure...

In fact, the only reason I want to try HDRi is to see how accurately I can recreate a scene and if it's nominally better than just a single exposure. My skills with the camera are basic at most so if this will allow me to have greater control of my images, then it'll be a good thing. We will soon find out...
